'Celia Knowles' has been built for the
Hawke's Bay Coastguard by AMF Boat
Company, located in Mount Maunganui
in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty (near the
Port of Tauranga).
The design of the sleek, modern search
and rescue RIB is the outcome of
cooperation between the Coastguard and
the AMF Boat Company design team with
the aim of delivering a greater range and
speed to the service, reflecting the
increasing tendency of local fishing vessels
to range further afield.
The new vessel, with three internal
watertight bulkheads and heavy-duty
Hypalon tubes, replaces the Coastguard's
8.5-metre Naiad RIB and offers the size
and stability to withstand the rough
conditions occurring 75 nautical miles off
shore and beyond.
The aluminium RIB has an overall
length of 11.7 metres on a beam of 4.28
metres with a draught of 0.73 metres.
'Celia Knowles' is powered by twin
Cummins six-cylinder diesel engines, each
rated at 358kW at 3,200rpm, driving twin
HamiltonJet HJ 322 waterjets, delivering a
maximum speed of 40 knots and a cruising
speed of 26 to 30 knots. With a fuel
capacity of 1,100 litres, the vessel has a
range of 230 nautical miles at 30 knots.
The vessel is equipped with
HamiltonJet's "blue ARROW MouseBoat"
system which offers synchronised
electronic steering of the twin waterjets
and extraordinary manoeuvrability,
flexibility and reponsiveness -- the system
allows the vessel to move sideways while
the movement between high and low
speeds is seamless.
The vessel's twin Cummins engines offer
both good fuel efficiency and notably low
It is equipped with a full suite of
navigation and communication electronics,
with the majority of products supplied by
Furuno, including radar simultaneously
presenting sweeps on two different ranges,
as well as a Plastimo compass and camera
system offering remote, continuous
surveillance of the vessel's engine room.
The vessel is also equipped with a full,
ambulance-style paramedic kit and has a
fold-down boarding platform at the
transom for rescue operations.
A bequeath from the estate of Celia
Knowles enabled the purchase of the
vessel and the gesture is recognised in the
AMF Boat Company currently has two
quick response rescue vessels (AMF QRU
