Woody delivers high speed tourist
RIB to Port Douglas
Woody Marine Fabrication's latest
delivery is a 12-metre high speed tourist
RIB for Port Douglas, Queensland.
Powered by a bank of three 223kW
Yamaha outboards, the 12-metre x
4.1-metre x 0.7-metre 'Reef Sprinter 3' is
true to its name, with a top speed of 50
knots and an economical cruising speed of
The client's current tours involve half-
day trips to Low Isle, situated eight nautical
miles off the Queensland coast. With this
new vessel, however, half-day outer reef
tours can now also be offered, providing a
more personable and intimate experience.
On board, a full width transom and
hinging swim platform lowers into the
water, providing safe and easy access for the
passengers to snorkel and explore the local
wonders of the reef. When the platform is
manually deployed, it submerges
approximately 0.4 metres below the
waterline so passengers can sit and prepare
for the dive with flippers and equipment.
When everyone is safely on the boat,
the platform is winched up and locked into
place and ready for the fast transit home.
Overhead storage is located in the canopy
and further storage can be found under
each seat for all on board.
The theatre style seating has been
designed to offer the best visibility forward
for all passengers. Clear roll-downs have
also been fitted, providing great protection
from the weather -- important for passenger
comfort when travelling to the outer reef at
When fully loaded, the 'Reef Sprinter 3'
vessel tops 7.6 tonnes. The hull design and
shape has been developed to trim perfectly
with the forward passenger loads, and the
lines of the dash have been kept very clean
and simple. Standard with all Woody
tourist vessels is a full-standing-height head
located under the main dash console with
a freshwater vanity.
According to Woody, the client took
delivery of its first large RIB from

the builder seven years ago. Impressed,
a follow-up order for the 'Reef
Sprinter 3' was confidently placed. With
outstanding future orders from Victoria,
New South Wales, Western Australia and
Queensland, Woody is looking forward to
the next few months with more launches
soon to come.
